Chateau Pape Clement is located in the Commune of Pessac, only 2 kilometers south-west of the city of Bordeaux.  Pape Clément is one of the oldest great growths in Bordeaux. The vineyards were first planted in the 13th century by Bertrand de Goth, the youngest son of a noble family from Bordeaux. He was elected Pope in 1305, during the reign of Philippe le Bel, and took the name of Clément V. Château Pape Clément belonged to the Archbishop of Bordeaux until the French Revolution. Wine has been made here continuously for 7 centuries.   The land where Chateau Pape Clement lies is on the oldest of these alluvial terraces, the graveled nappe of the Pyrenees. The unique character of the Pape Clement site resides in the presence of a thin covering layer of more recent alluvial deposits from the Garonne. The proportion of clay increases to the east; this type of soil, better at retaining water, diffuses it slowly. The vines thus begin the maturation process under moderate hydric stress, without being vulnerable to the phenomena of sudden drought conditions.   The high percentage of iron in the subsoil and subterranean water contribute to the land’s personality. According to the experts, this contributes to the spicy and smoky bouquet characterizing Chateau Pape Clement wines.
